Carpets of Sand – Corpus Christi in La Orotava
June 6th next sees the celebration of the feast of Corpus Christi in La Orotava. This is one of the most significant annual events in the municipality.
Magnificent rugs made with flowers and coloured sand form the basis for a show that attracts thousands of visitors from all over the island. Several days beforehand local families and companies will design the carpets which form the display on paper or straw matting.
The outline is later filled in with petals. While men and children lay out the design women prepare the petals. Everybody in the town takes part. Perhaps the most spectacular carpet is that made in Town Hall square. It is made from different coloured volcanic sands from the highland areas of Cañadas de El Teide.
Each year the designs are unique as none of the figures, images or floral carpets are repeated in later year. Take your camera and record history!!!
